One significant need in the library is for children’s early readers books — short, hard-cover illustrated books that adults can read to their children (or grandchildren) and which the children can then start to read for themselves. Although the library has 20,000 of these books, since there’s such demand for them they are almost always checked out and wear out much more quickly than a book in the adult collection does. Frequently the shelves look like the picture to the right — bare because all of the existing books have been checked out.
