Ruth Colvin, the founder of Literacy Volunteers of America, was a speaker at Read Santa Clara’s last book launch event. She turned 100 years old on December 16! Read Santa Clara’s learners and tutors will be participating in a book discussion of her book, “Off the Beaten Path- Stories from Around the World” in Jan/Feb.
Ruth recalls that in the 1962, when she began her work out of the garage in her home in Syracuse, NY, she stored the literacy books in a broken refrigerator! On 12/11, Read Santa Clara’s learners and tutors collected their copies of the book for the Book Discussion (shrink wrapped) from the Mission library refrigerator and sent their birthday wishes to Ruth!
