It’s National Literacy Month

September is National Literacy Month! Suha, a Read Santa Clara tutor, wrote, “ The biggest misconception about tutoring is that only one person walks away with more knowledge. As a tutor, I learned just as much- if not more- from my learner… My learner taught me that sometimes life is hard, but it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and learn more—who knows, maybe you’ll teach someone a thing or two as well.”

It is estimated that 1 in 6 American adults struggles with basic reading, writing and/or math skills. (PIAAC survey).  Adults with limited literacy skills sometimes hesitate to ask for help due to their embarrassment and fear of being judged. It takes only a few minutes to make a referral to Read Santa Clara, but it may change the person’s life. If you know someone who is interested, Read Santa Clara’s main number is (408) 615-2956.
