The Santa Clara City Library will be celebrating the Mission Branch Library’s 70th anniversary on Saturday, November 1, and we are proud to be a part of it. Festivities will be from 12:30 PM to 4 PM.

In celebration of 70 Years of Stories, the Library wants YOUR story! If you have a memory of the library or a photo to share, please let us know via this form as soon as possible. We want to hear from YOU!

Mary Hanel wrote up this history of the Mission Branch Library for us back in 2016, when its latest renovation was just beginning. We encourage you to read it and learn more about the history of the oldest library in Santa Clara!

Our 2025 honoree was Steve Ricossa. Steve joined the Board of Library Trustees in July 2016, and continues to serve on the Board. He took on the role of Liaison to the Santa Clara City Library Foundation & Friends in 2018, and eventually was elected a full board member of the Foundation in 2020. He still serves on the Foundation board. He has lived in Santa Clara for over 36 years and is also a member of the Board of the Mission City Community Fund and of JW House at Kaiser Santa Clara.
Our speaker was Preston Metcalf, the Executive Director and Senior Curator, Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. In addition to his 35 years with the Triton Museum, he was also a lecturer of Art History at Mission College in Santa Clara, and San Jose City College. He has lectured on art and art history both locally and abroad, has had more than 60 articles and essays published, and had his first novel, Casanova, Curator of Memories published in 2018. Through his innovative art and education programs at the Triton Museum, hundreds of thousands of our community’s children, youth, and adults have received fundamental art education and experiences, including award winning programs such as sculpture classes for the blind, hospital bedside art instruction for chronically and terminally ill children, art mentoring for developmentally disabled adults, and art/literary crossover programs such as the Triton’s immensely popular monthly Triton Book Club, which explore the influences of art on literature, and how great literature sometimes influenced the visual arts. He sees art not as a static form of entertainment, but rather — like literature — as world expanding experiences, bringing new views, ideas, considerations, and voices into our lives.
