What is planned giving?

This post is part of our occasional series on planned giving.

You hear about planned giving, but you don’t often hear what that means. What is planned giving? It’s when you make a plan to make a donation to a charitable organization later. Not now. This can mean the organization would be a beneficiary of your 401k or your life insurance policy or, most commonly, it can be a bequest in your will.

Why do people do it? Well, sometimes there are tax benefits, but most people do it to leave a legacy in their community: to make sure the cause they care about can continue.
