Why I love the library, a letter from Nancy Toledo

I spent early elementary school summers visiting the small store front library a few blocks from my house. I’d go several times a week and return home with an armload of books. A few days later, I would return the books, and the librarian would stamp my reading card with an image of a worm. I was in the Summer Reading Program and I loved accumulating the worm images.

Since then I’ve lived in several cities and used the library in each one. A first priority has always been getting a library card. Now, I am privileged to live in Santa Clara where we have one of the finest libraries in the state, if not the country.

Libraries are no longer just books. Our library is a place for education, enrichment, entertainment, personal development, and community involvement. Not to mention access to the entire world via the electronic resources available to all; and made accessible to all through various programs and workshops. And it’s all free! In short, the library is The Great Equalizer.

For all of those reasons, I am a proud supporter of the Santa Clara City Library Foundation and Friends.
